Depression is often described as an illness that only people who suffer from it can understand. Many people may believe they cannot help someone with depression, but of course there are some things that everyone can do to help the individual. One of these things is talking to them, getting them out of their house or classroom, and taking their mind off whatever they are unhappy about. These two short clips show what it's like to be on the other side; one clip shows us peering into a forest while stressing on our student’s final exam while the other shows us having fun with friends at a carnival like atmosphere with all sorts of exciting rides and games. There are some things that are just natural for all of us, while some things are obviously beyond any one's control. Depression affects people of all ages and cultures. It is more common in women than in men, although men can experience it too. The symptoms include sadness, unhappiness, hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness and helplessness. There may be physical symptoms such as fatigue or loss of appetite. The person may also suffer from insomnia or lose interest in life or turn destructive or self-destructive ("cutting"). These are the warning signs that the person should seek help right away. Depression is not the result of personal failure, but rather a chemical imbalance that often affects brain chemistry. Life events trigger depression just as they do for anyone else, but depression does not cause problems. The individual is responsible for their own actions and feelings. The problem of depression can be severe enough to affect the individual’s life, but it does not define them. It can lead to thoughts of suicide or self-harm or even physical illness, so these things should always be taken seriously. Next, students will watch the second video clip which is about one of the ways people can help others during periods of tough times. Activity: Students will watch the first video clip and write down all the feelings, moods, and emotions that are present throughout this 15-minute video.
